Mauritania Releases Female Prisoners

عربي

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz issued an unprecedented pardon to four women prisoners on March 8. Women’s participation in politics has increased in Mauritania in recent years. Women currently occupy six out of 22 ministerial posts--including Naha Mint Mouknass, the only woman foreign minister in the Arab world--and 20 percent of parliamentary seats.
