The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is pleased to announce that Sherman Katz will join the Endowment as a senior associate in the Trade, Equity, and Development Project on February 13, 2006.
“We are delighted to welcome Sherman to the Carnegie Endowment,” said Carnegie’s President Jessica T. Mathews. “His extensive knowledge of the WTO and international trade law will serve as an invaluable asset to our trade, equity, and development team.”
As a senior associate at Carnegie, Katz will focus on economic integration in East Asia, Aid for Trade to developing countries, implications of Chinese accession to the WTO, and the distribution of benefits from U.S. Free Trade Agreements. As the world’s economy becomes increasingly complex, the Carnegie Endowment recognizes the need for clear and cogent thinking about the strategies and consequences of international trade negotiations and agreements.
Katz has been the William M. Scholl Chair in International Business at The Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC since February 2000. During his 30 years of practice in international trade law, he has represented U.S. and foreign corporations, governments, and multilateral institutions in trade policy issues, including national trade regulation and litigation, World Trade Organization negotiations, agreements, and dispute settlement. A member of the New York and District of Columbia Bars, Katz graduated from Amherst College, Columbia University School of Law, and the Columbia School of International Affairs.
He has made countless media appearances and is widely published in newspapers and academic journals. He also edited the volume Trade Policy Challenges in 2005. He is an adjunct professor of International Trade at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
