America's New Nuclear Option

ChuEditor's Note: Although the Obama administration has supported subsidies for a new round of nuclear power plants in the United States, the loan guarantees will not take effect until the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves operating licenses for the reactors. It remains to be seen whether and how the lack of a permanent nuclear waste repository, coupled with lingering safety and infrastructure concerns, will affect new nuclear reactor construction.

Toshiba, Bill Gates to Cooperate on Next-Generation Nuclear Reactor

Toshiba Corp. will study cooperating with U.S. venture firm TerraPower, funded by Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates, to jointly develop a next-generation nuclear reactor that can operate for up to 100 years without refueling, company officials said Tuesday.
