The 2016 presidential race will be remembered for many ugly moments, but the most lasting historical marker may be one that neither voters nor American intelligence agencies saw coming: It is the first time that a foreign power has unleashed cyberweapons to disrupt, or perhaps influence, a United States election. And there is a foreboding sense that, in elections to come, there is no turning back.

India, Japan Likely To Sign Civil Nuclear Deal During PM Narendra Modi's Visit

India and Japan are likely to sign a civil nuclear cooperation agreement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Japan next week as the two sides completed the internal procedures for the much-awaited agreement. The two countries had sealed a broad agreement for cooperation in civil nuclear energy during Japanese Prime Minister Shiozo Abe's visit to New Delhi last December but the final deal was yet to be signed as certain technical and legal issues were to be sorted out.

IAEA Director General Highlights the Potential of Nuclear Science and Technology for Development in Qatar and Saudi Arabia

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano highlighted the important role that nuclear science and technology can play in national development during his visit to Qatar and Saudi Arabia on 30 and 31 October. During his visit to Saudi Arabia on Monday, Mr Amano met with the Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources Khalid A. Al-Falih to discuss Saudi Arabia’s plans in developing a nuclear power programme. He also visited the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE).

India Hopes NSG Committee Meeting Will Brighten its Entry Prospect

A consultative committee meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) next week is expected to improve India’s prospect of admission to the 48-nation club founded four decades ago. At the November 11conclave at Vienna, India is looking forward to “unanimity” on a “feasible” process that can make it an NSG member despite not being a party to the non-proliferation treaty (NPT), sources said.

China starts to Build its First Floating Nuclear Power Reactor for Deployment Off Coast

China has started to build its first floating nuclear power reactor, which it plans to deploy off its coast by the end of the decade. State-controlled China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has begun construction of the ACPR50S reactor, and will acquire the reactor pressure vessel that encloses the reactor core from Dongfang Electric, CGN said in a statement on Friday.

North Korea’s Nuclear Ticket to Survival

In recent months, a number of US officials have begun to reassess their understanding of why the North Korean government wants nuclear weapons. Rather than repeating the standard claim that the North Korean government is taking extreme measures to intimidate its enemies into making concessions, some officials have begun to suggest that the North Korean government desires nuclear weapons for defencive purposes.
