Context
- Stepped up allied cooperation in 2010 ahead of their back-to-back hosting of the APEC forum in 2010 (Japan) and 2011 (United States).
Goals
- To cooperate on sustainable agriculture, women’s issues, climate change, and regional emergency preparedness within the APEC framework.
Significance
Within APEC, Japan hosted the first Ministerial Meeting on Food Security in 2010, and it continues to be held every two years. Japan also convened the Women Entrepreneurship Summit in 2010, followed by the U.S. hosting the Women and the Economy Summit in 2011. Starting in 2011, the newly formed Emergency Preparedness Working Group began conducting multiple projects and workshops, and the two countries also launched the Energy Smart Communities Initiative focused on more efficient transportation, buildings, grids, and low-carbon model towns.
