Significance

Argo is an international collaborative ocean-observing program of over 3,000 floats that drift around the world’s oceans and take approximately 100,000 data collections a year on oceans’ characteristics. It allows for a huge amount of vital data to be collected frequently at a low cost due to the participation of over 30 nations. Japan and the United States endorsed the program as part of the Common Agenda and jointly implemented the Pacific portion of Argo. Japan and the United States are the largest contributors to the program, consistently deploying the most floats compared to other countries.
