Context
- Announced in 2001 by President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to address tense long-standing economic issues between the U.S. and Japan.
- Consisted of five subgroups, each dedicated to a specific goal: encouraging private-public cooperation, promoting regulatory reform, addressing macroeconomic issues, increasing bilateral investment, and addressing trade problems before they escalated.
Goals
- To create an environment of sustainable growth by focusing less on sectoral issues or quantitative goals than previous initiatives but still addressing remaining economic issues.
Significance
A new global security context and a less results-oriented approach gave the partnership a low public profile, and in some ways this aided the dialogue’s productivity.
