Context
- Launched in 2010 amid other economic bilateral U.S.-Japan initiatives to improve the economic relationship between the two countries.
- As a part of the dialogue, Japan’s METI and the U.S. State Department established a corresponding council, composed of both government and private-sector leaders.
Goals
- The dialogue’s focus: To strengthen bilateral economic ties and further enhance the coordination of commercial policy.
- The council’s focus: To support the dialogue through studies and reports to both governments on best practices, policy, and possible areas of bilateral cooperation.
Significance
Besides various symposia, this dialogue and council have prompted cooperative initiatives such as the Cross-Pacific Innovation Network, which uses Japanese technologies and U.S. business services to create international commercial models; the TOMODACHI Initiative, a public-private collaboration that helps in the recovery for the 3/11 disaster and invests in future generations; and joint planning for the Asian Entrepreneurship Award 2012, which recognized the successes of entrepreneurs from Japan as well as developing Asian economies.
