Context
- Bilateral cooperation established in the 1990s on intelligent transport systems, including an annual workshop at the ITS World Congress and a researcher exchange program.
- Task force created in 2009 to elevate cooperation.
Goals
- To collaborate on intelligent transport systems research for the benefit of both countries, with an aim of expanding eventually into a trilateral effort with the EU.
Significance
In 2010, the Department of Transport and MLIT signed a Memorandum of Cooeration to promote bilateral cooperation in intellgient tansport systems (ITS).
By 2011, collaboration transitioned from a bilateral to trilateral Steering Group with EU involvement.
Later in November 2013, the task force drew from Japanese precedents to produced a trilateral probe report, identifying 19 possible applications for their current research on the logistical data that vehicles produce as they operate.
