- Created in 2007 to implement a joint civil nuclear action plan.
Goals
- To foster new research and development, build new power plants through collaboration on policies and programs, initiate regulatory and nonproliferation-related exchanges, and address fuel supply assurance mechanisms.
Significance
The group specifically researched simulation and modeling, waste management, fast reactor technology, small and medium reactors, and barriers and opportunities for peaceful use of nuclear energy in developing nations.
GNEP ended with the Obama administration, becoming the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation, which later ceased after the third meeting in 2010.
U.S.-Japan nuclear cooperation continues through other initiatives.
