Context
- Announced along with other initiatives at the November 2010 summit meeting between President Obama and Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
- Builds on years of cooperation between Japan and the U.S. on nuclear security.
Goals
- To protect and safeguard nuclear materials and work toward the goals of the Nuclear Security Summit.
Significance
As specifically outlined in its published 2014 fact sheet, the group has helped develop programs for Japan’s new Center of Excellence for nuclear materials and security. It also helped secure the removal of all plutonium and highly enriched uranium from Japan’s Fast Critical Assembly facility.
