Significance

One initiative was Eduque a la Niña, initially started in 1991 by USAID alone. Japan contributed to the project from 1995 until it ended in 1997, boosting female school enrollment via microscholarships and promoting community engagement. It increased attendance rates, reduced the dropout rate, and increased girls’ active participation in the classroom. Japan and the U.S. also cooperated on Women in Development projects in Cambodia and Egypt.
