WASHINGTON—The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace announced today the appointment of Rexon Y. Ryu as senior adviser. Ryu will lead an initiative focused on the intersection of diplomacy, technology, and innovation. 

In his government service, Ryu most recently served as chief of staff to former U.S. secretary of defense Chuck Hagel. He was previously deputy to the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, nonproliferation director at the National Security Council, and foreign policy adviser for then-U.S. senator Hagel. Ryu began his public service career at the State Department, where he served abroad in both Cairo and Jerusalem and as a special assistant to the deputy secretary of state, among other assignments.

“Rexon is one of the smartest and most promising foreign policy minds I encountered during my thirty-three years of government service,” said Carnegie President William J. Burns. “Rexon’s depth of knowledge, breadth of experience, and strategic acumen will be a huge asset for Carnegie as we look ahead at a whole new set of opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies to global order.”

Ryu earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School.
