BRUSSELS—Carnegie Europe announced today the appointment of Gwendolyn Sasse, a political scientist specializing in Eastern Europe, as a nonresident associate. Her research will focus on Ukraine, EU enlargement, the EU’s relations with its Eastern neighbors, and Russia.

Sasse is professor of comparative politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations and the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies at the University of Oxford, where she also works on comparative democratization, ethnic conflict, and migration issues. Prior to her appointment at Oxford in 2007, Sasse was a senior lecturer at the European Institute and the Department of Government at the London School of Economics.

Sasse is author of The Crimea Question: Identity, Transition, and Conflict (Harvard University Press, 2007), which won the Alexander Nove Prize. She is also a member of the Advisory Council of the European Center for Minority Issues in Flensburg, Germany.

“Gwen is a high-caliber scholar who is coming on board at just the right moment,” said Jan Techau, director of Carnegie Europe. “I am thrilled to see her join our team at a time when real expertise on Eastern Europe is one of the most sought-after resources in the foreign policy world.”
