Doubts and frustrations about globalization’s promises are widespread. Concrete proposals to minimize its costs, steer it in more desirable directions, or even alter its more fundamental drivers have lagged behind. The tension between issues and solutions will be experienced in force, during the upcoming IMF/World Bank meetings. In a panel cosponsored by Foreign Policy magazine and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, experts from different backgrounds and perspectives will discuss and debate concrete responses. Panelists include: George Soros, philanthropist and financier, will preview his upcoming book on globalization to be published by PublicAffairs. Nancy Birdsall, Carnegie senior associate, recently produced a report by the Commission on the Role of the Multilateral Development Banks in Emerging Market Economies, co-chaired by José Angel Gurria and Paul Volcker. John Cavanagh, director of the Institute for Policy Studies, is the co-author of 10 books on the global economy, most recently A Field Guide to the Global Economy (with Sarah Anderson and Thea Lee). Lori Wallach is director of the Global Trade Watch at Public Citizen and founding borad member of the International Forum on Globalization. Jessica Mathews, president of the Carnegie Endowment, will moderate.
