A Story of Decline

Carnegie’s Wael Gamal talks about the middle class in the Arab world, and what its weakening means.

Published on July 3, 2018

Wael Gamal is the El-Erian fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. His research focuses on political economy in the Middle East and North Africa, the inequality gap, and the hollowing out of the middle class in the Arab world. It is on this topic, namely the fate and future of the middle class in the Arab countries, that Diwan interviewed Gamal in June.
