About the Carnegie China Young Ambassadors Summer Program

Carnegie China is seeking highly qualified and motivated students and recent graduates to apply for its Summer Young Ambassadors Program. Selected interns will have the opportunity to learn about key foreign policy issues by interacting with and supporting senior Chinese and international scholars and experts and supporting Carnegie China’s activities and operations. Interns will become an integral part of Carnegie’s global network.

General requirements for all global interns:

  • Be able to intern from June 12, 2023 through August 25, 2023.
  • Be able to contribute 35 hours per week
  • Be a college or university student or recent graduate
  • Have a background in international affairs or international security or a desire to work in the field
  • Apply no later than March 10, 2023 5pm via the online application
  • Please note, the 2023 Summer internship program will be conducted remotely.

How to Apply

The application process is extremely competitive. Applications will be judged on past academic performance, relevant academic study, and/or work experience. Personal interviews may be conducted.

For full consideration, all candidates must upload a resume, a cover letter, and two writing samples to the online system. The two writing samples must be contained in a single attachment following these guidelines:

  • One sample no longer than 600 words or 1,200 Chinese characters, written within the last six months on a topic relating to international relations or security.
  • One paragraph no longer than 100 words or 300 Chinese characters summarizing a previous writing sample. This summary can be of your first sample, or it can be of a different piece.

Attached writing samples may be written in Chinese or English, but candidates must enter all other application form data in English. Applications that are incomplete or do not follow the above guidelines will NOT be considered.

Candidates can choose to intern on one of the following teams:

Communications

Interns will support the Communications team in its internal and external programs and will focus on one of the following: Events or Media and Chinese Content.

Successful candidates for the communications team should be highly organized, have strong attention to detail, and a strong sense of responsibility. Superior writing skills and a strong comprehension of the English and/or Chinese languages are required. Candidates should have a basic understanding of international relations and knowledge of current events in order to properly draft materials and support events. Applicants should have superior cross-cultural skills and be able to work efficiently in teams or on individual projects.

A. Events

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Organizing and coordinating events, including logistics, registration, and other event-related duties
  • Translating event-related materials
  • Researching on possible invitees and guests for events

B. Media & Chinese Content

Previous experience in Chinese social media such as WeChat, Weibo, Zhihu, Toutiao, and international social media including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn is highly desirable. Skills and knowledge of videography, photography, content-management systems and HTML are desirable but not required. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Helping operate Carnegie China’s social media accounts, particularly Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook
  • Translating internal and external communications team documents (English-to-Chinese)
  • Promoting Carnegie’s research content through Chinese and international media outlets
  • Tracking and recording media coverage and image materials of Carnegie China and the scholars
  • Helping to produce digital content to promote scholars’ works, including videos and social media images

Operations

Successful candidates should have an entrepreneurial spirit with an interest in international relations and/or organizational management. An ability to work in a rapid environment in both Chinese and English and attend to fundamental tasks with a strong attention to detail is preferred. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Helping manage day-to-day programmatic and financial affairs
  • Providing support in the management of the Young Ambassadors Program, including team-building events, professional development, and training sessions
  • Assisting in the development of the Young Ambassadors Alumni Network, organizing alumni events and publishing the quarterly newsletter

Development

Successful candidates should have excellent problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in an international and multicultural setting. Candidates for this position should have an interest in the business and/or philanthropic environments in China and Southeast Asia. Prior experience in event planning and grant writing are a plus. Fluency in Chinese is preferred, but not required. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the development coordinator in cultivating and stewarding Carnegie China’s relations with foundations, embassies, multinational corporations, and business leaders.
  • Drafting a monthly newsletter on business developments related to the Carnegie China’s development network
  • Supporting the development coordinator in organizing regular virtual events with the Corporate Council and Advisory Council
  • Drafting concept notes, grant proposals, and grant reports
  • Tracking and reporting on programming growth and impact
  • Managing a database of development contacts and tracking engagement
  • Prospect research and due diligence reporting on potential donors and partners
  • Translating content relevant for communications, events, and research.

Program & Research Team

Successful candidates for the program and research team will have strong analytical, writing, and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a team as well as independently. Program and research assistants should have knowledge of Carnegie China scholars’ field of expertise and a strong interest in conducting research in one or more of these fields. They should also have superior organizational skills as well as research experience.

A. Programs & Research

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing research assistance to Carnegie China scholars and staff
  • Monitoring developments in U.S.-China relations, Chinese foreign policy, and international affairs in Asia
  • Compiling topical memos, news briefs, and event summaries
  • Liaising with the communications team regarding scholar events and publications
  • Tracking scholars’ monthly activities and drafting activity reports
  • Working closely with scholars and intern teams to plan and organize scholar events
  • Providing logistical and content support for scholars

B. China In The World Podcast Program

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying and proposing experts for podcast episodes
  • Preparing expert bios as well as podcast scripts and questions
  • Coordinating podcast sessions and logistics
  • Writing post-podcast summaries and transcriptions
  • Managing podcast marketing and social media presence
