The triangular dynamic between the United States and the rising powers of China and India will be affected by the new challenges posed by such issues as economic integration, energy security, and environmental degradation.

The United States must look beyond short-term goals if it hopes to maintain its economic vitality in Asia. Its regional stake will be challenged by China, whose relative rise has been accelerated by its effective response to the global crisis.

Asian states have, for now, concluded that U.S. hegemony is robust and can provide the public goods that no other Asian country is yet willing to provide. Asian states have high expectations of peace in the future, and are committed to the use of political means to resolve disagreements.
