The Strategic and Geopolitical Implications of Russian Energy Supply, Security and Pricing

Tue, June 17th, 2003

On June 17-18, 2003, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy of Rice University hosted a two-day closed seminar on the strategic and geopolitical implications of Russian energy supply, security and pricing. The participants included senior members of the United States and the Russian governments, as well as oil industry leaders and experts from both countries.

The seminar, organized by Martha Olcott and Amy Jaffe, generated productive dialogue and debate on critical issues. It provided a forum for a very open and frank discussion of the energy issues facing Russia and the United States, leading to better understanding of the geopolitical, cultural and economic complexities of the influences of Russian energy supply, security and pricing.

Visit the Carnegie Moscow Center site for the agenda, selected transcripts, meeting summary, press conference, and participant information, in both English and Russian. The Carnegie Endowment and Baker Center will write a report based on the discussions, to be released in 2004. Preliminary report is now available.
