Disinformation in the Digital Age: Are Citizens Prepared?

In the digital age, governments are increasingly dependent on the internet and social media for disseminating information to citizens. But in countries like the UK, US, and Canada, where nearly half of the population graduated high school before the web was invented, how much do citizens understand about how information is processed, manipulated, and presented to them through internet-based communications?
Especially as the spread of disinformation on these technologies has ripped at the fabric of democracies around the world, are citizens equipped with the media literacy skills to consume, understand, and react to misleading or outright false information populating their news feeds?
Join the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Partnership for Countering Influence Operations (PCIO) and Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) for a conversation on how democracies can better prepare people for life in a highly interconnected and complex information environment, with insight from the recent working group report, The New Weapon of Choice: Technology and Information Operations Today.

Maria Ressa is a leading journalist in Asia whose reporting career has spanned over 35 years. She is the co-founder of Rappler, the top digital-only news site that is leading the fight for press freedom in the Philippines.
Mike Caulfield
Mike Caulfield is a digital information literacy expert working at Washington State University Vancouver. He is a winner of the Rita Allen Misinformation Solutions Prize, and the author of the award-winning textbook Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers.
Jussi Toivanen
Jussi Toivanen is Chief Communications Specialist at the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office in Helsinki. Before the present position, Mr. Toivanen worked as Information Officer in the Finnish Ministry of the Interior and the National Police Board.
Kelly McFarland
Kelly McFarland is a U.S. diplomatic historian and the director of programs and research at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy.
Barbara Bodine
