The State of Democracy in India 75 Years After Independence

India's diverse population and sprawling geography has long sown doubts around how long democracy in India would survive, even as the country marks its 75th anniversary of independence this year. The surge in popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—along with the party's Hindu nationalist ideology—has threatened to narrow the scope of who belongs as an Indian citizen.
