Spaces of Citizenship: Exploring New Frontiers

Thu. June 12th, 2014
Beirut

This conference was the first in a series of dialogues that sought to explore the ideological backgrounds to the unfulfilled promise of social justice in Arab countries and sought to consider the challenges and options forward in the post-Arab uprisings environment. Participants explored what social justice means in their varied national contexts and how it has been addressed. They presented individual country-based visions of social justice and its links to the rights of citizenship, as well as the challenges to achieving such a vision in Egypt, Yemen, and Tunisia. The conference was also dedicated to exploring possible socio-economic policies that Islamist parties could adopt and how such policies can blend Islamic principles and promote social justice.
