Alison Markovitz is the chief operating officer at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.  In this position, she works closely with the president to oversee and manage all aspects of Carnegie.  Her career includes prior roles at a U.S. National Laboratory, the Department of Energy, the White House, and as an attorney.

Before joining Carnegie, Markovitz served from 2017-2022 as the chief strategic partnerships officer at Fermilab, the United States’ leading particle physics and accelerator laboratory.  She oversaw several operational areas, including chairing the board of international funding agencies supporting the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, the lab’s flagship experiment. 

From 2011-2017, Markovitz held leadership positions at the U.S. Department of Energy, including as senior advisor to the secretary of energy with a focus on agency operations.  Previously, she worked as a deputy associate counsel at the White House, as a lawyer in private practice in San Francisco, and as a law clerk at the California Supreme Court and at the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.  Markovitz spent a summer working at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations under former ambassador Madeleine Albright.

Markovitz received a J.D. from Yale Law School and an undergraduate degree from Yale University in political science and international studies.
