Jessica Mathews, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, today announced that James C. Gaither, managing director of Sutter Hill Ventures and former member of the Carnegie Endowment board, replaces William H. Donaldson as its chairman. Donaldson resigned from the board to serve as chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
"We will sorely miss Bill Donaldson's dedication and leadership, but our loss is the American public's gain. He will be an outstanding SEC chief," said Mathews. "We are fortunate that Jim Gaither has agreed to return to the Endowment board. His previous experience with Carnegie, combined with his nationally recognized leadership roles in business, technology, and philanthropy will be invaluable as the Endowment prepares for the future."
James C. Gaither is a managing director of Sutter Hill Ventures, one of the country's oldest and most successful investment firms. He also is special counsel to Cooley Godward, one of the nation's top technology law firms. He joined Cooley Godward in 1969, has been a partner since 1971, and served as managing partner from 1984 to 1990. He began his career as a law clerk to Earl Warren, chief justice of the United States, then was special assistant to John W. Douglas, assistant attorney general, civil division, at the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as staff assistant to President Lyndon Johnson. Currently on the boards of several companies and foundations, he also has served as chairman of the Stanford Board of Trustees. Gaither served on the Carnegie Endowment board from 1981 to 1999 and was vice chairman from 1990 to 1999.
William H. Donaldson joined the Carnegie Endowment board in 1988 and was elected chairman in 1999. Before heading the SEC, he was chairman of Donaldson Enterprises, Inc., a private investment firm he founded in 1981. He has held numerous senior positions in business, academia, and the government, including chairman, president, and chief executive office of Aetna, Inc.; cofounder and chief executive of the investment banking firm Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette, Inc.; chairman and chief executive officer of the New York Stock Exchange; founder, first dean, and Beinecke professor of management at Yale University's Graduate School of Management; and under secretary of state to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and counsel and special advisor to Vice President Nelson Rockefeller.
