Leading Iranian political scientist, Mohammed Hadi Semati, has joined the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, announced the Endowment’s president, Jessica T. Mathews. Semati, on leave from Tehran University, will be a visiting scholar with the Democracy and Rule of Law Project, in particular its Middle East Political Reform Initiative. He will focus on Iranian politics and U.S.-Iran relations.
“A leading advocate for reform in Iran, Semati brings a new level of understanding of Iranian affairs to the foreign policy community here,” said Mathews. “His experience with civil society and political reform in Iran will add a great deal to our current work on global democracy issues.”
Semati adds depth to Carnegie’s Iranian expertise. Daniel Brumberg, a senior associate, is a leading expert on political and social change in the Middle East and the wider Islamic world. He is the author of Reinventing Khomeini: The Struggle for Reform in Iran (University of Chicago Press, 2001). In the nonproliferation arena, George Perkovich has focused on issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear capabilities. M. Hadi Semati is on leave from his position as assistant professor in the faculty of Law and Political Science at Tehran University. He is a prolific writer and frequent commentator on Iranian domestic and foreign affairs, including Iran’s security issues, political reform in Iran, Arab-Iranian relations, and the Islamic revolution. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University at Tennessee at Knoxville.
