The American Society of Magazine Editors announced that FOREIGN POLICY is a finalist for the 2005 National Magazine Award, for General Excellence. FOREIGN POLICY won the award in 2003, in the circulation category of under 100,000. This year’s nomination comes in FP’s first year competing in the category for magazines with a circulation of 100,000–250,000, reflecting the magazine’s continuing growth.
The National Magazine Awards have been presented annually for 40 years and are the magazine industry’s highest honor. This year’s finalists were chosen from among 1,562 entries by a judging panel comprising 195 editors, art directors, and journalism educators. Winners will be announced in New York on Wednesday, April 13, 2005.
“We are thrilled to once again be named as a finalist for the National Magazine Award,” said FOREIGN POLICY Editor in Chief Moisés Naím. “This latest nomination, combined with FP’s growth in circulation, shows we are bringing a fresh approach to a field that too often equates seriousness with dullness. An ever growing audience wants to know about the global issues and trends shaping our daily lives. FP demonstrates that it is possible to provide analysis of global events that is both rigorous and readable.”
Jessica T. Mathews, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, which publishes FOREIGN POLICY, said, “We are delighted about this recognition of FP’s leadership and staff. The magazine dares to be original where others are formulaic. The approach is clearly paying off.”
