Press Release: Kofi Annan Joins Carnegie Endowment Board of Trustees

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace announced today that Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, has been elected to its Board of Trustees.

Welcoming the announcement, the Chairman of the Board, James C. Gaither, said:

“We are honored to welcome Kofi Annan to the Carnegie Endowment’s Board of Trustees.  With his unsurpassed experience as the world’s leading diplomat for the last decade, Kofi brings to Carnegie the deepest understanding of the many challenges to international peace, from security to human development, and of the ways in which to address them.  I can think of no more important endorsement of the Endowment’s vision of becoming the first global think tank than his decision to join us in making this pioneering venture a success.”

Secretary-General Annan said: “I am delighted to join the distinguished ranks of Carnegie’s Board of Trustees at such an exciting time in the Endowment’s 96-year history.  The recent redefinition of its role and mission—to become the first global think tank—is a vital one which I support.  With so many challenges ahead, it is crucial that the world addresses these problems through truly international partnership and collaboration.”

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace launched its “New Vision” on February 6, 2007, adding operations in Beijing, Beirut, and Brussels to its existing longstanding offices in Moscow and Washington, to form effective, independent, international partnerships through which to address global issues.
