BRUSSELS—The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is proud to announce that Jan Techau, a noted expert on EU integration and foreign policy, transatlantic affairs, and German foreign and security policy, will lead Carnegie Europe, its pan-European centre. As its new director, Techau will oversee the next phase of Carnegie Europe’s growth in its efforts to bring a unique global vision to the European policy community.
Making the announcement, Jessica Mathews, president of the Endowment, said:
“We are excited to welcome Jan Techau as the new director of our centre in Europe. Jan’s strong knowledge of European foreign policy issues and institutions will provide critical direction for Carnegie Europe’s further expansion, ensuring that we continue to foster fresh thinking on the regional and global issues shaping Europe’s role in the world.”
Techau said:
“I am honored to be appointed director of Carnegie Europe. It is my aim to expand the centre’s role as a leading policy hub offering new ideas and frank debate on European and international politics. Over the next few years Europe will need to determine whether it wants to be a strategically-minded global player and Carnegie Europe aims to make a constructive, high-quality contribution to this crucial question. I look forward to being part of this discussion.”
Techau’s career spans policy research, academia, and communications. Prior to joining Carnegie, he served at the NATO Defense College’s Research Division from February 2010 until March 2011. He was director of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin between 2006 and 2010 and from 2001 to 2006 he served at the German Ministry of Defense’s Press and Information Department.
Techau is an associate scholar at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and an associate fellow at both the German Council on Foreign Relations and at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS). He is a regular contributor to German and international news media such as the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Bloomberg, Deutschlandradio, and Irish Times.
