WASHINGTON – The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace today announced the addition of Suzanne DiMaggio as a senior fellow.
DiMaggio is one of the foremost experts and practitioners of diplomatic dialogues with countries that have limited or no official relations with the United States. For nearly two decades, she has led these track 1.5 and track 2 conversations to help government officials identify pathways for diplomatic progress. Her policy dialogue with Iran dates back to 2002 and helped lay the foundation for the secret talks between Iran and the United States that led to the 2015 comprehensive nuclear agreement. Her dialogue with North Korea has included several visits to the country, and has helped facilitate direct talks between Donald Trump’s administration and the regime of Kim Jong-un.
DiMaggio comes to Carnegie from New America, where she served as senior fellow and director of the U.S.-Iran Initiative. She previously served as the vice president of global policy programs at the Asia Society and vice president of policy programs at the United Nations Association of the USA.
“We are thrilled to welcome Suzanne,” said Carnegie President William J. Burns. “As an independent, global institution, Carnegie is especially well-placed to facilitate and inform difficult diplomatic conversations. Suzanne will bring extraordinary experience and expertise to these efforts across our global network. Like so many other diplomats in the United States and around the world, I have long admired Suzanne’s skill and savvy and benefitted enormously from her quiet efforts over many years, including when we launched our direct diplomacy with the Iranians in 2013. For an institution committed to advancing international peace, I cannot think of a more important endeavor, or a better person to lead it.”
“It’s an honor to join Carnegie,” said DiMaggio. “With Bill Burns at its helm, there is no institution better equipped to advance ideas and initiatives to help bring a sense of order to today’s disordered world. I look forward to working with old friends and new colleagues to help realize Carnegie’s important mission.”
