Obama Condemns North Korea Nuclear Test, Promises New Sanctions

U.S. President Barack Obama condemned North Korea's nuclear test on Friday as a "grave threat" to regional security and international peace and said he would work with U.S. partners on new sanctions against Pyongyang. "To be clear, the United States does not, and never will, accept North Korea as a nuclear state," Obama said in a statement, in which he singled out Pyongyang as the only country to have tested nuclear weapons this century.

Few Expect China to Punish North Korea for Latest Nuclear Test

North Korea’s biggest nuclear test, conducted last week less than 50 miles from the Chinese border, sent tremors through homes and schools in China’s northeast. But hours later, there was no mention of the test on China’s state-run evening television news, watched by hundreds of millions of viewers. The decision on Friday to publicly ignore stark evidence of Pyongyang’s expanding nuclear capabilities illustrated the embarrassment that North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, poses for his patrons in Beijing.

Poland Places Supply Order for 8 US Patriot Missile Defense Systems

Poland's Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz announced on Wednesday his decision to place a supply order for eight Patriot surface-to-air missile systems with the US government. "Poland will get eight Patriot systems, two of which will arrive in Poland as early as in 2019," Macierewicz said, as quoted by the Telewizja Polska broadcaster.

Russia Test Fires Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces have successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during a military exercise, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on September 9, according to TASS news agency. The test launch of the nuclear-capable Topol-M  (aka RS12M2/NATO reporting name SS-27) or more advanced Topol MR (aka SR-24 Yars/NATO reporting name SS-27 Mod2) ICBM—the defense ministry did not specify the missile type—took place at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome,  in Arkhangelsk Oblast, approximately 800 kilometers north of Moscow.

Koreans Near Investment in New Cumbrian Nuclear Plant

A South Korean energy group is closing in on a multibillion investment in a new nuclear power station near Sellafield in the latest sign of Asian interest in Britain’s energy industry. Korea Electric Power Corporation(Kepco) is in talks about joining the NuGen consortium planning a £10bn plant at Moorside on the Cumbrian coast alongside existing owners Toshiba of Japan and Engie of France.
