In her new book, Shields of the Republic: The Triumph and Peril of America’s Alliances (Harvard University Press), Mira Rapp-Hooper reveals the remarkable and unheralded success of the United States’ alliance system, its dangerous strategic drift, and an agenda for its renewal. Nearly thirty years after the demise of the Soviet Union, and amidst China’s rise and Russia’s revanchism, will American policymakers reconceive the role alliances should play in 21st century national security strategy and recapture one of the country’s great force multipliers, or let them wither on the vine?

Join us for a conversation between Mira Rapp-Hooper from the Council on Foreign Relations and the New York Times national security correspondent David Sanger. To submit a question for the event, please use the YouTube chat or tweet at us @CarnegieEndow using #AskCarnegie.
