Featuring Paul Volcker, former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman, and José Angel Gurria, former Mexican Finance Minister

In light of the World Bank 2001 Spring Meetings in Washington, DC, this event will provide an extraordinary opportunity to review and discuss the role of multilateral development banks in emerging economies, an issue that has become increasingly controversial in recent years.

At the heart of the debate is whether the multilateral banks should operate in countries that can no longer be considered poor and that have ready access to private capital flows.

The discussion will focus on the results of a study sponsored by EMP Financial Advisors, the Inter-American Dialogue, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The study, "The Role of MDBs in Emerging Market Economies: New Policies for a Changing Global Environment," was released on April 26.
