Keynote: Nuclear Industry's Role in Nonproliferation

Mon. April 6th, 2009
Washington, D.C.

2009 Carnegie International Nonproliferation Conference Anne Lauvergeon, CEO of Areva, the world’s largest nuclear energy company, discussed the need for the nuclear industry and the nonproliferation community to engage in dialogue on how to responsibly handle the worldwide enthusiasm for nuclear power. Industry must recognize that it has a stake in the health of the nonproliferation regime. She made the case that if export controls and international safeguards standards are tightened, a nuclear renaissance will not necessarily increase proliferation risk.
