The Socioeconomics of Transition

Thu. April 3rd, 2014
Beirut

This workshop was held as part of the Carnegie Middle East’s stalled transitions initiative as well as part of FRIDE and Hivos’ “Transitions and Geopolitics in the Arab World” project. Participants from FRIDE, Hivos, and the Carnegie Middle East Center joined regional partner think tanks to explore the economic dimension of the transitions taking place in the Middle East and North Africa. While significant attention  has been paid to political reform and national identity issues throughout these transitions, economic indicators continue on a downward trend. The workshop identified what domestic economic reforms were needed and what the conditions for their implementation would be. It also explored the implications for external actors and donors, including international organizations, and what role they could play in supporting economic reform.
