Taiwan’s economy is at the forefront of the IT revolution, han an important role in the global supply chain, and its leading companies partner successfully with American firms. It is actively extending its economic role in the Asia-Pacific to participate in regional economic integration.
Carnegie was pleased to host Taiwan’s former deputy minister of Economic Affairs Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang and former minister of Economic Affairs Steve Ruey-long Chen. They presented their views on Asian economic integration, business and investment opportunities with Taiwan, and Taiwan’s economic role in the Asia-Pacific region. Douglas H. Paal moderated.
Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang
Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang currently serves as chairman to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). He served as Taiwan’s deputy minister of Economic Affairs between 2012 and 2014.
Steve Ruey-Long Chen
Steve Ruey-Long Chen is the chairman of Powerchip Technology Corporation, a major memory solutions company in Taiwan. He was Taiwan’s minister of Economic Affairs between 2006 and 2008.
Scott Miller
Scott Miller is a senior adviser and holds the William M. Scholl Chair in International Business at CSIS. From 1997 to 2012, Miller was director for global trade policy at Procter & Gamble where he was responsible for international trade, investment, and business facilitation.
Douglas H. Paal
Douglas H. Paal is vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He previously served as vice chairman of JPMorgan Chase International and was an unofficial U.S. representative to Taiwan as director of the American Institute in Taiwan.
