The Future of Armed Forces in a Democratic Kurdistan Region

Mon. May 18th, 2015
Erbil

The Carnegie Middle East Center, in partnership with the Middle East Research Institute (MERI), held a high-level conference in Erbil that explored the institutionalization and unification of Kurdistan’s Peshmerga Forces, who were in the midst of confronting the threat posed by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. The conference sought to identify the challenges facing the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and to suggest ways to address its lack of professional development and the divisiveness in its forces in order to render it more effective, not just as a force opposed to the Islamic State, but also as a necessary imperative to deepen democracy and nation-building in the Kurdistan region.

This conference was held at and recorded by the Middle East Research Institute in Erbil.
