Governing Diversity: The Kurds in the Middle East

The Carnegie Middle East Center held a public discussion to present the findings of the Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies’ report entitled Governing Diversity: The Kurds in a New Middle East. The three-year, field-oriented research project looks at the challenges of Kurdish representation in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran.

Michael Gunter tackled the Kurdish question in Syria and its prospects. Christine van den Toorn gave an overview on the situation facing Kurds in Sulaimaniya, Iraq. Michiel Leezenberg discussed Kurdish politics in Iraq, the referendum crisis, and its consequences.

SPEAKERS

Michael Gunter is a professor of political science at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville and is an authority on Kurds in Turkey and Iraq.

Michiel Leezenberg is an associate professor in the department of philosophy and the Islam in the modern world program at the University of Amsterdam.

Christine van den Toorn is the executive director of policy and external relations at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani. She is also the director of the University's policy center, the Institute for Regional and International Studies.

Mohanad Hage Ali is the director of communications at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.
