Carnegie Announces New Visiting Scholars
Khalid Al-Dakhil Joins from Saudi Arabia
John B. Judis on Leave from The New Republic

Khalid Al-Dakhil and John B. Judis have joined the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace as visiting scholars, announced Jessica Mathews, president. Al-Dakhil, a professor at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and columnist for Abu Dhabi newspaper, is with the Democracy and Rule of Law Project. John B. Judis, a leading columnist and editor, is taking leave from The New Republic to write a book on the lessons for current foreign policy from the imperialism debate of the early 1900s.

"Visiting scholars bring vital new perspectives and energy to the ongoing research of the Endowment. Khalid's expertise is invaluable, given the critical time for the Middle East generally and for U.S.-Saudi relations specifically," said Mathews. "Meanwhile, John will make an important contribute to our assessment and understanding of the U.S. role in the world."

Khalid Al-Dakhil is an assistant professor of political sociology at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. He has been a columnist for London's Al Hayat newspaper and is now a columnist for Abu Dhabi newspaper. He is widely published in Arab journals. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During his four-month tenure at the Carnegie Endowment, his research and outreach will focus on Saudi politics, history, and reform as well as the country's relations with the United States. His contribution will augment the Middle East Political Reform Initiative of Carnegie's Democracy and Rule of Law Project.

John B. Judis has been with The New Republic since 1982. He also has written for The American Prospect since its founding in 1991 and is responsible for the monthly Below the Beltway column. Judis's books include The Emerging Democratic Majority, The Paradox of American Democracy: Elites, Special Interests, and the Betrayal of Public Trust; William F. Buckley: Patron Saint of the Conservatives; and Grand Illusion: Critics and Champions of the American Century. His articles have appeared in The American Prospect, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, The Washington Monthly, American Enterprise, Mother Jones, and Dissent. Scribner will publish Judis's book on U.S. imperialism in the summer of 2004.
