Succession and the October Presidential Elections in Azerbaijan
Carnegie Event Examines Potential Impacts of Upcoming Election

What: With the Azerbaijan presidential election a month away, the appointment of Ilham Aliyev as prime minister by his ailing father, President Heydar Aliyev, is drawing heavy scrutiny and worldwide attention. Because of the country's shared border with Iran and a sizable oil reserve, questions arise about whether the transfer of power from father to son will serve as a precedent for other states, how it will affect the country's internal and foreign affairs, and what impact it will have on the global oil industry. Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is hosting a discussion addressing these issues.

Who: Jayhun Mollazade, current president of the US-Azerbaijani Council and former Azerbaijani diplomat, will examine the dynamism of the political situation and the prospects for future economic developments. Mollazade, who has recently returned from a month in Azerbaijan, is a specialist in oil and business.

Edward Chow, Carnegie visiting scholar, will comment on implications of possible political unrest in Azerbaijan on the global oil industry.

Martha Brill Olcott, senior associate at Carnegie, will serve as moderator and talk about the impact that events in Azerbaijan may have on other CIS states.

When: Friday, September 12, 2003, 12:15 p.m. (lunch provided)

Where: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
1779 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (Metro: Dupont Circle).

RSVP: Maura Keaney, 202/939-2372 or mkeaney@ceip.org, by September 11th
