Three new scholars have joined the Democracy and Rule of Law Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace: Nathan Brown and Amr Hamzawy are senior associates, and Michele Dunne is editor of the Arab Reform Bulletin. All contribute significant expertise to the project’s Middle East Political Reform Initiative, which analyzes political reform in the Arab world and how the United States and other external actors can most effectively encourage positive change.

“With these additions, Carnegie’s unique niche on the subject of Middle East political reform is even stronger. Amr brings extensive personal and professional experience in the region. Nathan is extraordinarily knowledgeable on a range of critical issues. Michele’s return ensures the continued high quality of the Arab Reform Bulletin,” said Carnegie President Jessica T. Mathews.

Nathan Brown, who will be taking leave from his position as professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, is a distinguished scholar and author of four well-received books on Arab politics. He has special expertise on Palestinian reform and Arab constitutionalism. He will explore the participation of Islamists in Middle East politics and the changing shape of political space in the Arab world.

Amr Hamzawy is a noted Egyptian political scientist who previously taught at Cairo University and the Free University of Berlin. He will bring a deep knowledge of the region as well as wide experience with European work on Middle East politics. Hamzawy will research and write on the changing dynamics of political participation in the Arab world, including the role of Islamist opposition groups, with special attention both to Egypt and the Gulf countries.

Arab politics expert Michele Dunne returns to the Endowment, where she previously was a visiting scholar. Dunne, a former specialist at the State Department and White House on Middle East affairs, is a visiting assistant professor of Arabic at Georgetown University. At the Endowment, she will edit the highly successful Arab Reform Bulletin, a monthly e-newsletter published in English and Arabic which provides incisive and objective analysis of reform developments in the Middle East.
