Douglas Paal appeared on CCTV America to discuss the state of U.S.-China relations in light of tensions over the contested Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands and the Chinese declaration of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) over the East China Sea. Paal noted that these kinds of tensions can undermine relations if not managed appropriately and that it is the responsibility of the security apparatuses in each country to find healthy ways of responding to such potential sources of conflict. He also noted that although the speed with which China has been developing is difficult to adjust to, China’s economic reform process is aligned with U.S. interests. He concluded that it will take time and hard work to dispel the mistrust which currently characterizes U.S.-China relations.
