Summary
This conference will bring together senior government officials, academic experts, leaders of non-governmental organizations, the private sector, media, and relevant others to discuss the "best" from among the existing border arrangements, to argue the merits of alternative approaches, to think creatively about managing borders from the vantage point of border communities, and to develop alternative policy proposals. Participants will come from all three NAFTA partners, as well as from research sites outside of North America.
Following this event, Carnegie Endowment will publish a report with conclusions and recommendations for the United States, Mexico, and Canada to improve upon existing programs and adapt and institutionalize the "best practices" that have been identified in the field research and during the conferences. This report will be a springboard for a more public debate regarding alternative visions of borders in North America. The inventory of the most promising and replicable best practices, the contexts in which they have developed, and the recommendations that emanate from the analysis will thus be shared with the widest possible number of leaders of border communities and national governments.
