Marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy R. Sherman reflected on U.S. engagement in Northeast Asia. Having recently returned from a trip to China, South Korea, and Japan, she spoke about the post-war era and how the United States is rebalancing to Asia and is working with partners and allies to build a peaceful and prosperous regional order amid many challenges.

William J. Burns
William J. Burns is president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He previously served as U.S. deputy secretary of state.

Douglas H. Paal is vice president for studies and director of the Asia program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Wendy Sherman has been under secretary of state for political affairs at the U.S. State Department since 2011.
A former career diplomat, William J. Burns served as director of the CIA, deputy secretary of State, and ambassador to Russia and Jordan. Burns was also president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 2015 to 2021.
