India and the Sovereignty Principle

Despite its limited material capabilities in the post-independence period, India accorded the sovereignty principle paramount in its international interactions and ensured that sovereignty—both domestic and international—was upheld to the greatest extent possible. In recent years, India has experienced an upswing in its capabilities and is seen as an important power, in both hard and soft power terms, by the international community. What is India’s current stance on the sovereignty principle? Is it consistent with its earlier orientation?

In partnership with the Department of International Relations at South Asian University, we hosted a workshop that undertook a comprehensive review of India’s engagement with the sovereignty principle across three themes: diplomacy, hard power, and technology.
