Leonard A. Schuette

Leonard A. Schuette is a fellow in the Europe Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His areas of expertise are European defense policy and U.S. grand strategy. 

Before joining Carnegie, Dr. Schuette was an International Security Program Fellow at the Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he conducted research on the future of NATO as well as the foreign policy of the Trump administration and the U.S. new right. Leonard also worked with the Munich Security Conference, the German Marshall Fund, the American-German Institute, and the Centre for European Reform.

Leonard has published commentaries and essays in Foreign Affairs, Internationale Politik, The Times, War on the Rocks, and others, as well as scholarly articles in journals such as International Affairs. He is the co-author of The Survival of International Organizations (Oxford University Press, 2025) and co-editor of several Munich Security Reports. He has also appeared on BBC News and DW News.
