After decades of hyper-globalization, international trade patterns and development finance systems are being recast, with major implications for countries in the Global South—particularly those in Africa. Global trade is shifting towards a focus on regional trade blocs and reshoring supply chains in advanced economies, while foreign investment patterns are shifting in response to reduced donor financing. African countries are among those most affected by these shifts, but also among the most primed to leverage them for economic development and financial resilience. Carnegie’s work on trade and investments examines how these evolving dynamics shape Africa’s global economic relations to provide a knowledge base to support the continent’s aspirations for economic transformation.
