The Background Briefing’s Ian Masters and Carnegie’s Rachel Kleinfeld discussed U.S> President Donald Trump’s recent firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Tillerson’s firing was inevitable and should not come as a surprise, Kleinfeld said. She argued that Tillerson’s vocal condemnation of Russia’s recent nerve gas attack in the face of Trump’s studious silence was merely the trigger, and not the cause of his, departure. While some may lament the departure of Tillerson’s comparative moderation, she added, she believed that he was undeniably one of the worst secretaries of state who oversaw a near total evisceration of the department’s basic functionality and operations.
